Living Well @ Western

The University strives to foster the development of a safety consciousness in all members of the University community for the purpose of minimizing the risk of injury to persons or the damage to property or facilities. As safety standards change the University is committed to keeping abreast of these changes, to communicating these standards within the campus, and to ensuring compliance on an ongoing basis. (Western's Health & Safety Policy)

The University will comply with all applicable federal, provincial and municipal legislation with respect to health and safety (for example: Federal Nuclear Safety and Control Act and Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act). Legislated standards in health and safety are accepted by the University as minimum standards, and the University reserves the right to establish and enforce more stringent standards as may be considered appropriate, such policies being considered as binding upon all students, staff and faculty.

Extended Heat Warning and Smoke Warning in Effect

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) has issued a (Yellow) Heat Warning beginning Monday, July 13, and extending through to at least Thursday, July 16, with the possibility that it could further extend into the weekend. Please see the warning from the Middlesex-London Health Unit.

Precautions are urged for those members of the Western community working outside, and supervisors must be aware of Western's “Working in Hot Weather or Hot Workplace Environments" guidelines/procedure, which recommends escalating precautions when the humidex reaches 35 and higher, or air temperatures reach 32°C and higher. Workers are encouraged to dress in light clothing, apply sunscreen, drink more water, take more frequent breaks and work in the shade if possible. They are also encouraged to work with a buddy and monitor each other for signs and symptoms of heat stress, as individual response to heat can vary from person to person.

The MLHU has some tips to avoid the risk of heat-related illness that employees may also find helpful. All those who work outside at Western are encouraged to make themselves familiar with Western’s policy and to review the Heat Stress Awareness Guide developed by the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers (OHCOW). Any questions may be directed to: hsw@uwo.ca.
